Throughout history, music has always been a source of joy and beauty which is a reason enough to learn to play an instrument!
Modern scientific studies however, have proven tangible benefits to the brain through the practical aspects of learning and playing of an instrument.
Some of these benefits include academic enhancements such as improved reading and listening skills, verbal intelligence and math comprehension developed through the process of learning the various notes and values.
Further skills such as concentration, co-ordination, counting, memorization, spatial awareness, developing fine motor skills, stimulating the rhythmic system, and creativity all contribute to an increase in academic success.

Studying the composers gives the student a more intimate understanding of the musicians, their music, relevance and connection to what they are learning to play, as well as creating an awareness of the world at large.
